How to keep your blonde hair fresh between visits

How to keep your blonde hair fresh between visits

Everyone loves blonde hair until they find out they have to work harder to keep it looking fresh & healthy. One little secret all lighter hair tones should know about is purple (toning) shampoo. Whether you are a balayage, all over blonde or just have some summer highlights, using a toning shampoo on a regular basis will help you maintain your locks in between salon visits.

Keep in mind a purple shampoo will not make your hair lighter, what it does is counteracts the brassy/yellow tones making it look brighter

Lightening your hair requires bleaching which in turn requires more processing and chemicals (even with our amazing Matrix bonding lightener). Unfortunately this leaves the hair compromised & more susceptible to breakage. This process opens up the hair cuticle and allows UV rays, pollution, and other pollutants to enter. This prevents your hair from retaining moisture, which over time will make your colour appear dull and brassy.

IS TONING SHAMPOO ONLY FOR BLONDES?

Not at all, in fact, toning shampoos have come such a long way, you can now get them for brunette, silver, blonde & naturally grey hair. If you have unwanted golden, brassy, red or yellow tones we have the shampoo for you!

BUT HOW DO YOU KNOW WHICH ONE IS THE RIGHT ONE FOR YOU?

With all of the social media marketing for hair care & the ever-growing options, it can be difficult to choose just one. As general rule of thumb to follow is the lighter the shade of pigment the less toning power it has. Quality toning shampoos will have a thicker consistency, deeper colour pigment, and will not appear as translucent. Blue or even green tones are designed for toning brunette hair & will counteract unwanted orange tones, Purple shampoo will neutralise brassy & yellow tones, where as the ‘black’ tone will counteract yellow tones & add silver tones to the hair

HOW TO USE PURPLE SHAMPOO

Typically, purple shampoo can be used just like your normal shampoo, however it really depends on how brassy your hair is & how “toned” you like it.  As some general advice, shampoo your hair with your normal salon quality shampoo to open up the hair cuticle & lift any residue from product use, the environment, or heat styling tools. With your 2nd shampoo (yes you should be shampooing twice!) use your toning shampoo that is best suited for your hair. Lather the shampoo throughout wet hair and let it sit, depending on your brassiness level, will depend on how long you can leave it. Rinse your hair thoroughly after washing & use a conditioner or treatment. Always read product directions

What happens if I overuse my toning shampoo?

In some cases, you might find your hair will over-tone. If you have icy-blonde hair and leave a purple shampoo on too long or use it every time you wash your hair, you will end up having a blue/purple tinge to it. If this does happen & you don’t like the look of it, reduce using the toning shampoo to every 2nd or 3rd wash and use your normal salon shampoo instead.

Keep in mind that toning shampoo should not replace your regular shampoo (unless you are trying to upkeep silver hair).

We would advise you to use a toning shampoo every 2 or 3rd wash. Depending on which brand you are using you may find it leaves the hair feeling dry. Overusing it can lead to build up and dullness. It is always recommended that as a blonde you use a treatment in your home care routine as well.
